Dialogue with framing [site] BY Adeeb Ashfaq, Central Saint Martins

EXERCISE IS TO BE LOCATED IN THE SECOND YEAR OF THE MINI DEGREE EXERCISE; SECOND YEAR OF BA FINE ART COINCIDES WITH ERASMUS EXCHANGE AND THE MOVE TO KING’S CROSS CAMPUS

DISCUSSION:

The workshop will last a full day and will take in consideration of the studio as a site, Archway as a site, Kings Cross as a site, and by extension the ‘Gallery’ as a sites for presenting and making work. The workshop will aim to consider the above as a mode of public, yet private space. It will encourage thinking and situating oneself in these spaces.

Studio: A public space where students share private space for the production of work and discussion.

Archway: A public space where the students have private space in. The site also houses large numbers of other students from other pathways on the first year of BA Fine Art, and other courses and disciplines including Foundation.

Kings Cross: A site which houses multiple communities of disciplines of artists, designers, lecturers, tutors, visitors, staff and members of the public. The site sees a large turnover of people passing through the private institution of Kings Cross and Central Saint Martins, either as guests or customers of local businesses.

Gallery: A private institution usually reserved for the presenting and production of a body of work. Often such private institutions are open access to the public.

LOGISTICS:

The workshop  will be split into two sections: the first will be a tour of the Kings Cross campus. It will enable to the students to consider the different communities inhabiting the space. The tour will take in the various departments within the building, but will also see the students consider the smaller ‘off spaces’  (bridges, sections under the staircases, cubby holes etc.) as a valid forms of spaces for sharing, documenting and presenting work. It will also create an awareness of other departments and facilities available at Kings Cross.

The second section of the workshop will see the group split into smaller teams to re-visit some of the sites discovered on the tour. The smaller groups with then aim to claim ownership and physical presence using masking tape to mark out their respective ‘territories’.

TOOLS:

Masking Tape, Camera (or some other form of device to record and /or document with)
